Script Proposal & Synopsis
The title of the proposed script would be 'Savile' the reason being would be the main plot of the drama being based around the very topical story revolving the Jimmy Savile allegations. I chose 'Savile' because of the seriousness it suggests. This is similar to many other factual drama's for example Lincoln, Milk etc.
The genre of 'Savile' would be a factual drama. The reason being as the drama will have a lot of accurate information. This will be regarding the subject matter of the BBC suggested corruption. As the programme will be based around the 'Newsnight' investigation the concept will be the suggesting of the governments own bias and corruption. A concept on this would be for the viewers to know the truth about the injustice of the axing of the 'Newsnight' with the interview with Karin Ward. The unique selling point of the drama being the accuracy of the information portrayed. In the drama there will be know creation of information in order to create drama. This would distract from the realism of the programme as I would be creating information at the expense of the real information. The target audience I am trying to appeal to would be from the ages of 30--60 years old as that would be the current ages of those who had watched the show Jim'll fix it' and so that would be the main target audience who would be interested in seeing such a massive part of their childhood uncovered. Not only this but I think with the content its only those who had seen Jimmy Savile on TV that would illicit the correct reaction from the viewers. To start the narrative off I think that their would be a shot of the back of a chair with an old hand with a cigar (This would suggest that this was Jimmy Savile), then it would zoom in onto the hand holding the cigar. The hand would then fall onto the arm of the chair dropping the cigar. In doing this the cigar will drop onto the floor smoking. This would suggest that Jimmy Savile was dead. The room in this scene must be a smokey, dark and dingy room with anything of detail covered by the smoke and darkness. Following this scene there would then be a montage of the shows which would commemorate Jimmy Savilles life. After this the story of Karin Ward will start.
I believe that my programme will be shown as a two parter in order for the first episode to provide a lot of the background information about the axing of 'Newsnight' however still primarily following the story of Karin Ward as she sees things from her perspective. The second part will follow with the investigation by Mark William Thomas and the eventual build up the revelation of the crimes of Jimmy Savile in the show 'Exposure'.
By focusing on this narrative I wish to show the truth from the eyes of one of the victims. Thought this i wish to convey a sense of horror and to remind the nation the result of the axing of 'Newsnight' and the way Karin was let down by the BBC for not exposing the 'real' Jimmy Saville. The main thing I want to achieve is quite simply to make people feel for this woman and the courage it took to do that interview. But not only this but the absolute tragedy of it not being aired.
Since the programme is based on fact, there is no need for any higher concept as it would take away from the accuracy of the story.
I think that the main character of my particular story would be quite easy to associate with for some people who may have gone through similar things associated with the character. However even if you have not gone through these things its very easy to feel sorry for this character but also a sense of astonishment at her courage. I think in terms of communicating with the target audience it will be done through this character.
The story revolves around Karin Ward and the trials she has faced dealing with the sexual abuse because of Jimmy Savile. The story will start with the death of Jimmy Savile and all the celebratory nature of the TV shows following his death. Then it will move onto the case of the axing of 'Newsnight' by George Entwistle for 'editorial' reasons. This will detail the let down of Karin after rising the courage to do the interview for 'Newsnight'. It will feature allegations against the director general of the BBC at the time.
Following this there will be the information passed onto investigator Mark William Thomas who will do a in depth investigation into the affairs of Jimmy Savile. In which would be given to him by the 'Newsnight' journalists. In which would follow up with questions being posed to the director general of the BBC. Following this there will be the 'Exposure' documentary on Jimmy Savile in which sees Karin getting some justice. The end will be marked by an interview on how the BBC had let her down.

- The main character will be Karin Ward. Karin Ward was a victim of Jimmy Saviles abuse but was also one of the interviewed in 'Newsnight' and one of the only to speak on camera about it. The reason I picked Karin was that she came across as a interesting and brave person to focus on.
- The next character will be Mark Williams Thomas who followed up the allegations made by the 'Newsnight' team after the show was axed and so he plays a major role in exposing Jimmy Savile for what he was.
- Liz MacKean was a journalist doing research into Jimmy Savile for 'Newsnight' and actually interviewed Karin Ward.
